Industrial Heavy Duty Caster Wheel Materials Compared

April 30, 20268 min read

Polyurethane on iron: the workhorse of heavy duty castors

Polyurethane-on-iron is the default heavy duty caster wheel for warehouse, retail backroom, and general material handling. The iron core gives load capacity (up to 2,500 lb on a 6-inch wheel) while the polyurethane tread protects floors, runs quietly, and absorbs minor floor debris without damage.

Look for 95A shore hardness for general use and 75A for floor-sensitive environments. The chemistry matters: hot-cast PU outperforms injection-molded TPU in both load capacity and abrasion resistance.

Forged steel: when load wins over floor protection

Forged steel heavy duty caster wheels routinely handle 4,000–10,000 lb per caster and survive impacts that would crater a polyurethane wheel. The tradeoff is brutal: steel-on-concrete is loud, abrasive, and ruins polished or epoxy floors.

Use forged steel in steel mills, foundries, shipyards, and any environment with hot debris, sharp metal swarf, or floors made of structural steel plate. Don't use it inside finished buildings.

Phenolic: the heat-tolerant specialist

Phenolic heavy duty castor wheels handle continuous exposure to 250°F and brief excursions to 475°F, making them ideal for bakeries, paint lines, and powder-coat ovens. Load capacities reach 1,800 lb on a 6-inch wheel.

Phenolic is rigid (not floor-friendly) and brittle in sub-freezing temperatures. Confirm the temperature range with your manufacturer before specifying.

Nylon and thermoplastic rubber for special environments

Glass-reinforced nylon heavy duty casters are non-marking, lightweight, and resist most industrial chemicals. They're the go-to for chemical plants and food production lines that can't tolerate metal contamination.

Thermoplastic rubber (TPR) wheels on stainless rigs are the standard for hospitals, cleanrooms, and FDA-regulated environments — quiet, easily disinfected, and corrosion-proof.
